Cray CX1 Taps Clustercorp’s Rocks+ for Linux
Seattle,
WA and San Jose, CA, November 18, 2008 – Cray
Inc (Nasdaq GM: CRAY) and Clustercorp today announced
the immediate availability of the Cray CX1 deskside
supercomputer preloaded with Rocks+ 5, the commercial
version of the Rocks Cluster Distribution for Linux
users. The joint solution is fully certified as
Intel® Cluster Ready and ships with Intel Cluster
Checker preloaded and pre-tuned.
The Cray CX1 supercomputer is the "right size" in
performance, functionality, and cost for individuals
and departmental workgroups who want to harness high
performance computing (HPC) without the complexity of
traditional clusters. Priced from $25,000, the Cray
CX1 is designed to be easy to purchase, deploy,
operate and upgrade. Purpose-built for offices,
laboratories and university departments, it is the
world's highest-performing computer that uses
standard office power.
"Cray is excited to combine the Cray CX1 with
Rocks+," said Ian Miller, senior vice president of
sales and marketing at Cray. "A principal goal for
the Cray CX1 was to bring HPC to a wide range of new
users by breaking new ground in affordability and
adaptability. With Rocks+ and Intel Cluster Ready the
Cray CX1 is simple to install, program and use with a
broad array of applications from ISVs.”
Intel Cluster Ready systems give users confidence
that their cluster will work as it should, right
away, so they can start solving new problems sooner
and decrease total cost of ownership. Users benefit
from a long list of registered Intel Cluster Ready
applications, which run with ease, without
interoperability issues.
"Intel collaborated closely with Cray and Clustercorp
to put together a seamless Intel Cluster Ready
solution," said Richard Dracott, Intel’s
general manager of High Performance Computing. "Intel
Cluster Ready is the result of our vision of the need
for simplicity to enable more organizations to adopt
HPC. By simplifying the installation, deployment and
supportability of clusters, we can broaden the scope
of users who can take advantage of the inherent,
proven benefits of HPC technologies."
Rocks+ is the commercial version of the Rocks Cluster
Distribution – an end-to-end HPCC software
stack, which includes the operating system, cluster
management middleware, libraries, and compilers; with
enterprise class commercial support from Clustercorp,
which was founded by the leaders in the Rocks
community. Available Rocks+Rolls include the Intel®
Roll, PGI® Roll, OFED Roll, TotalView® Roll and Moab®
Roll (Rocks+MOAB). Clustercorp also supports open
source Rolls including the Torque Roll and SGE (Sun
Grid Engine) Roll.
"We are delighted to see Clustercorp and Cray
collaborate on the Linux version of the Cray CX1,"
said Philip Papadopoulos, PhD, head of the Rocks
project at the University of California, San Diego.
"Cray has long been an innovator in our industry; it
is exciting to see one of the original leaders in
traditional supercomputing team up with one of the
driving forces behind the Linux-based commodity
cluster movement.”
“Clustercorp is thrilled to add Rocks+ 5 to
Cray’s fervently watched Cray CX1
launch,” said Tim McIntire, president and
co-founder of Clustercorp. “The design
foundations of the Cray CX1 – including
simplicity and repeatability – line up
perfectly with the principle goals behind
Clustercorp’s Rocks+ product line.”
